Tomoaki Makino is a 27-year old Japanese photographer. For the first exhibition of his artwork in London he photographed his mother and her friends and the mothers of his friends in their own homes.

Most of these women had left their jobs when their children were born, and even now, when their children have grown up and left home, they do not work.

They are now in their fifties and sixties and have spent the last twenty or more years making a home and bringing up children. Tomoaki took photos of them in their homes in the suburbs of Tokyo where Tomoaki also lives.

Maurice asked children from Christchurch Primary School in Hackney, London to come to Museum 52 (the gallery that showed Tomoaki’s photographs) to review the exhibition.

Unlike most reviews, the children’s reviews did not use words, but used pictures to show what they thought about the exhibition.

Because this issue of Maurice is an Atlas, the way that we asked the children to make their reviews was like a map.
